General resources on VA benefits that may support home care for Veterans and their families.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers several programs that may help Veterans receive care at home. These include the VA Community Care Network, Veteran-Directed Care, Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit, and Home Health Aide services through the VA Medical System.
Veterans and surviving spouses who require assistance with daily activities, are bedridden, are in a nursing home, or have low vision may qualify for the Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit — an addition to the VA Pension that helps pay for in-home care. This benefit is for wartime Veterans who meet income and service criteria.
Veterans can apply for benefits through the VA website (va.gov), in person at a VA regional office, or with the help of a VA-accredited claims agent or Veterans Service Organization (VSO). Allow time for the application process, which may take several months.
Massachusetts offers additional support for Veterans through the Massachusetts Department of Veterans' Services (mass.gov/veterans). Local Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) can help with benefit applications at no cost.
