General educational information about long-term care insurance — what it typically covers, how to read a policy, and questions to ask your insurer.
Long-term care insurance (LTC insurance) is a type of coverage designed to help pay for services — including home care, assisted living, and nursing home care — that are not typically covered by standard health insurance or Medicare.
Policies vary significantly, but many LTC policies cover non-medical home care services (like those provided by Atilex), assisted living facilities, adult day care programs, and nursing home care. Coverage typically begins after a defined "elimination period" and when the insured needs assistance with a certain number of activities of daily living.
Most LTC insurance policies trigger benefits when a person needs assistance with a specified number of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), which typically include bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, continence, and toileting. Some policies also include cognitive impairment as a trigger.
When reviewing a policy, ask: What daily or monthly benefit amount does the policy pay? What is the elimination period (how long before benefits begin)? How long does the benefit period last? Does the policy cover home care specifically? Is there inflation protection? What triggers benefit payments?
