Choosing a home care provider is one of the most important decisions a family can make. Taking time to ask the right questions — and listening carefully to the answers — helps ensure your loved one receives safe, compassionate, consistent care.
Ask whether the provider carries general liability insurance and workers' compensation. Independent caregiver arrangements may leave families legally and financially exposed if an injury occurs. Agency-employed caregivers are typically covered by the agency's insurance.
Ask specifically about CORI criminal background checks. In Massachusetts, responsible agencies run CORI checks through the MA Criminal History Systems Board (CHSB) before placing caregivers. Ask how often checks are renewed.
With an agency, caregivers are supervised, trained, and accountable to a care coordinator. If a caregiver is unavailable, the agency arranges coverage. With a private-hire arrangement, the family assumes the responsibility of supervision and backup coverage.
